Things to Do in Dougga & the North-West

Dougga is the best-preserved Roman site in North Africa, its theatre, capitol and forum still standing on a hillside that was never fully built over. West of it, Bulla Regia has a trick the other sites don't: its wealthiest villas were built partly underground to escape the summer heat, and their mosaic floors survive intact below ground level. Add the well-preserved baths of Thuburbo Majus, the Andalusian town of Testour with its star-and-crescent clock tower, and Jebel Zaghouan rising over the old Roman aqueduct route, and the north-west becomes a full day trip from Tunis on its own.
